The Chiffon Scarf Part 2: Lady Fingerprints

Season: 5 Episode: 7
Warning: Content Marked Explicit.
Published on

Mary and Mike recap this middle third of The Chiffon Scarf in our first FOUR-PERSON book recap! In this episode, they each take 16.67% (rounded up) of the middle third and walk us through some major developments: there's more bad news for the Blaine family, Eden gets her hands on everything, and Dorothy is still around. There are also several reminders this book was published in 1939, in the form of racial, gendered, and nativist stereotypes that are as subtle as a stranger on Sloane's ranch.

**NB: We apologize for the audio quality. Our guests Mike and Mary were both sick and didn't realize they were recording from their laptop mic. The content is so good though, we hope you won't notice!

From the back cover:

MIGNON G. EBERHART WRITES A MYSTERY ABOUT MURDER IN THE SKY...

Beautiful Eden Shore took a plane back to St. Louis for the wedding of an old friend. Swiftly, she made several new enemies--and fell in love with the prospective bridegroom.

That was only the beginning of a seven-day nightmare--with a climactic flight into murder most foul.

Some relevant characters:

  • Eden Shore: Main character that wants to deliberately induce marriage...doesn't really matter to whom as long as they're alive.
  • Averill Blaine: A longtime frenemy of Eden's, quite wealthy, currently engaged to Jim Cady. Has mood swings.
  • Jim Cady: A guy who knows about airplane parts. Has an uncoming wedding to Averill and a wandering eye. Between him and Noel, he's the alpha.
  • Noel Carreaux: Handsome guy, known to have money, left Averill at the altar for Eden. Complains a lot.
  • Creda Blaine: Married to the now deceased Bill Blaine. That makes her his....ex-wife? That's how that works, right?
  • Dorothy Woolen: Jim's very observant, detail-oriented, "doughy," secretary.
  • PH Sloane: Ex-detective who regrets trading his magnifying glass for a ten-gallon hat. Lives on a dude ranch with a lot of "Chinese boys" in the middle of nowhere.
  • Ludovic (Lud) Strevsky: Mike's brother.
  • Major Pace: Just wants to buy plane engine parts. That's all. Has a rock solid alibi but is still a foreigner, so remains suspicious anyway because nativism and xenophobia.
