World War I has ended, but when soldiers returned home in the Summer of 1919, they discovered that they had to compete for jobs with Black People. Racial strains run high as the Summer of 1919 became known as the Bloody Summer.
Meanwhile, Tangy Mae has finally arrived in Mississippi and pays Lennie Gray, a friendly visit but discovers that her best friend and cousin is brokenhearted and fighting feelings of hopelessness. When Tangy Mae finds out why she does her best to cheer Lennie Gray up.
