This classic short story by Washington Irving is a well-written tale of life in the Dutch settlement of Tarry Town in New York State in an area bordering the Hudson River , where many Dutch and German immigrants settled after Henry Hudson's explorations. Along with a desire to work hard and prosper, the Dutch brought with them their superstitions..and the deep woods and wild things in that country provided a great setting for stories. In this story, a tall, gangly schoolteacher named Ichabod Crane battles with a favorite local hero for the affections of a wealthy Dutch maid. Irving is a master of the English language and uses rich, descriptive words and phrases in his story, providing a great way for the listener to brush up on the better side of the English language. This old tale tells of a thief, who, upon unlawfully entering a house and breaking his leg on a weak window sill while climbing in, brashly goes to court to blame his broken leg on the carpenter who built the sill. The carpenter passes the buck...and so on down the line. The judge sees no problem with the original crime, and follows the reasoning of the thief. The tale makes a mockery of justice and illustrates the frustrations of a citizenry living in a situation where those responsible for crimes are not punished because the powers that be are willing to absolve the wrongdoers of any responsibility.

This story by Charles Dickens is a part of a larger story about the 1859 wreck of The Royal Charter, a steam powered clipper on its way from Australia to Liverpool, and carrying 370 passengers and a crew of 112. Many of the passengers were gold miners returning from the Australian Gold rush with their riches, and their was gold in the cargo hold. Unfortunately, a huge storm came up as the ship approached the coast of England, and the ship and all but 21 of its passengers were killed in the wreck. Charles Dickens, who then was an already famous writer in England, was on the scene soon after the wreck and interviewed the people involved in the wreck and rescue, and from this visit sprang two stories, one, a fictional account, featured here, and another, based on an interview with the local Reverend and witnesses, coming here next week. Also next week, our sister show 1001 Heroes will feature the story of The Royal Charter , the wreck and rescue attempts, and the treasure that is still being hunted today. Charles Dickens had heard the news of the wreck of the Royal Charter in Wales in October of 1859 and traveled to that area during Christmas. The salvage operation was still in progress, and the small village and the churches were still suffering the shocks of handling so much tragedy in so short a time. Dickens wrote of his visit in Chapter Two of his collection 'THE UNCOMMERCIAL TRAVELER" and shares his thoughts and experiences with the reader. #CharlesDickens #royalcharter #wrecks Check out our first E Book (May 2018) at Amazon Kindle and leave us a kind review  Thanks!  https://www.amazon.com/Classic-Short-Stories-Fireside-Collection-ebook/dp/B07CRW2RZ9/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1525854517&sr=8-4&keywords=kindle+books+1001+classic+short+stories

"History's Real Beauty and The Beast: Petrus and Anne Gonsalvus": This is a follow up to our recent episode titled "BEAUTY AND THE BEAST", which gave the abridged version of the Adult Fairy Tale written by Marie de Villanueve in 1748. It is very possible that Villanueve's inspiration may have come from the lives of Petrus and Catherine Gonsalvus, who were French courtisans best known for Petrus's very unusual appearance- looking more "beast" than man, with a full covering of long hair all over his body. The true story is so incredible that it seems invented- but it is documented. You are left to decide of they were the inspiration for Beauty and the Beast. "Sunday Ball" by author Zane Grey gives us a rare look at the early days of baseball in middle America, what it meant to small towns, what people thought of it, and in this case, what moral dilemmas were caused when certain teams and towns started playing baseball on Sundays. Zane Grey's story is a window into time, and a true one, because we know that he played minor league ball for years, earning a scholarship to The University of Pennsylvania, where he played ball and studied to become a dentist, following in the footsteps of his father. But his real passion wasn't dentistry-it was writing, and he found every opportunity he could during his professional career as a dentist to write. His first success came at age 37, with the book "The Shortstop", from which we have taken Chapter 13, "Sunday Ball", at the recommendation of one of our listeners, Dr. Gerald G Gelle, DDS, who is a dentist who also enjoys baseball as well as 1001 Classic Short Stories Podcast and Zane Grey. Zane Grey, by the way, went on to write 88 great stories, mostly westerns, of which 111 movies were made, and he also became an avid outdoorsman and fisherman. Born in Zanesville, Ohio, he knew and played small town baseball, and used Findlay Ohio as the locale for this story. #ZaneGrey #Baseball

In "The Storyteller" by Saki, three children and their aunt are traveling by train while she attempts, without much success, to capture their attention with a story.  The only other person in the compartment is a bachelor, who is becoming mildly irritated with the children's impatience at her inability to keep their attention, and he offers to tell them a story. At first affronted, she takes him to task, and he takes her whitewashed morality tales and delivers more of a Brothers Grimm version. As you can expect, the children are spellbound, but the Aunt-you'll want to find out.

The Three Wise Men by Damon Runyan tells the story of three mobsters who stop to help a woman having a baby, and find unexpected redemption for their troubles. Damon Runyan, a New York city sports writer and author, rose to fame in the prohibition era for his colorful stories which involved characters typical of the shady side of Brooklyn.  Runyan's stories were always narrated by one of these nameless mobsters, and always spoken in the present tense.  This style became very popular in movies in the thirties and forties. The Three Stooges popularized Runyan;s famous quote from this story "Wise Guy, eh?", and was one of the many expressions that were popularized during that era.

Chief "One Man Wearing Many Hats" is asking for your support and we're giving back in return!  We have added two new 1001 shows as bonus incentives for Patreon supporters: BEST OF 1001 (available to $1 /month supporters and up) and PRIME CUTS (available to 2.99/mo supporters and up). Most of BEST OF 1001 AND ALL OF PRIME CUTS will be AD-FREE. We give the whole story of these exciting new bonus shows at our Patreon page. https://www.patreon.com/1001storiesnetwork We are asking for your support at Patreon to help us as an independent network compete with the powerful multi-show podcast houses that are literally buying up the market and available rankings.  We need your support in addition to our sponsor support to remain competitive in this rapidly expanding market and industry. We will remain independent through the life of this show.  One big reason we will remain unattached to the podcast mainstream is that we avoid political correctness and try to present history as it really was without trying to apply today's cultural madness to yesterday's heroes and events- and we don't allow political correctness to decide who should be heroes and who shouldn't. We also keep our show clean and family friendly (our two favorite F words). If you would like to pledge a dollar a month or more here is the link:https://www.patreon.com/1001storiesnetwork the ins and outs of using the rss feed to place our new shows on your favorite podcast app: https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/212055866-How-Do-I-Get-and-Use-My-Audio-RSS-Link- Another link for Apple users:https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000877506-How-do-I-add-my-private-RSS-link-to-the-Apple-Podcast-App-
